Coastal RSM Plan Development, Orange County, CA

CSMW has been working to develop Coastal Regional Sediment Management Plans (Coastal RSM Plans) along the California coast. The Orange County Coastal RSM Plan is currently being developed to assist government entities, municipalities, stakeholders, and communities in developing strategies for beneficial reuse of sediments within the County's coastal watersheds to address coastal erosion.

More specifically, the Plan's purpose is to provide sufficient information for local and regional coastal decision makers to develop policies and/or execute management sub-plans for the future vitality of Orange County beaches and shoreline areas. Tasks to be completed as part of Plan preparation include:

  • Stakeholder outreach and coordination to ensure that local issues are addressed,
  • Collection of pertinent data related to economic (tourism, beach use, potential funding streams, etc.), sediment (potential sources, needs, locations, quantities, dredging statistics etc.), and environmental (critical species and habitats) concerns,
  • Inclusion of this data into CSMWs GIS database for ease of use by coastal decision makers,
  • Identification of and recommendations for techniques to enhance governance issues related to Plan implementation, and
  • Culmination of strategies into a Coastal RSM Plan specific to Orange County.

The Orange County Coastal RSM Plan will culminate in the drafting and release of a final Plan by September 2010. Several stakeholder meetings are envisioned to obtain public and local agency input. A kickoff meeting was held in Costa Mesa on November 10, 2009. Information presented at the kickoff meeting is available through links to your right.

CSMW is working closely with Orange County Parks (contact: Susan Brodeur ) to ensure that the Plan adequately reflects the needs of the region. CSMWs point of contact is Heather Schlosser of the Los Angeles District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Please check back often as ongoing activities and Plan developments will periodically be posted on this website.
