Commissioner H.P. "Sandy" Purdon

Commissioner H.P. PurdonH.P. “Sandy” Purdon, 68, of San Diego, has served on the commission since 2004. He fills the Commission vacancy for private small craft harbor and owner and operator.  Purdon has been the president of H.P. Purdon & Company, Inc. since 1977, a management firm handling waterfront real estate, marina development, special events, and related consulting. He is also the general partner of the Shelter Cove Marina in San Diego and the founder and chairman emeritus of the nationally recognized Clean Marinas California Program. In that capacity he was awarded US Boat Foundation’s first Environmental Leadership Award in 2007 and the Oceans Foundation’s Dr. Roger Revelle Perpetual Award “for significant contributions made in man’s ability to coexist with the marine environment and in helping to resolve ocean issues.”

Sandy was the Executive Director of the victorious San Diego Yacht Club’s Stars & Stripes America’s Cup Challenge in 1987 and was Commodore of the San Diego Yacht Club in 1991.  He is an active boater having raced in numerous regattas as well as sailing single handed alone from San Diego to Hawaii in 1987.

Mr. Purdon was past President of the Marina Recreation Association, past Chair and current board member of the San Diego Port Tenants Association, and a board member of the National Sailing Center and Hall of Fame.  He is a life member of the San Diego Oceans Foundation and a member of the US Sailing Association.  Purdon was the former Chairman of the San Diego International Sports Council.
